Exclamation NOTICE - Forum will be down part of day 1/25/09

Rackspace (our server host) called this afternoon and told us that our server harddrive is going kaput and that they need to replace it before it completely crashes and dies.

So, Chris is going to try to set it up for them to do tomorrow around noon CST and according to Rackspace, it'll take them about an hour. Then Chris will have to reinstall/restore all of our sites on the server which includes RHSS forum. Right now we don't know how long that will take but it could be a couple of hours depending on whether he runs into any problems.

And FYI, Chris will also have to do a backup of the forum (and the other sites) before they replace the harddrive. That's what he'll restore after it comes up so naturally anything posted between the time he backs up and restores will be lost. I'll make an announcement post that'll show on all the forums when to stop posting.

I'll let you know what time to look for the server to go down - you'll probably get a 404 error when trying to get here while it's down. If you want to know when it comes back up without trying over and over again, subscribe to this thread and I'll make a post when we're back up. You'll receive an email when I post to it. Make sure your email address on the forum is up to date tho.

Guess it could be worse in that most hosts don't bother to tell you that your harddrive is dying and you end up losing everything.

The forum is back up. There may be some bugs that Chris hasn't found or come across yet but everything so far looks like it's working on the forum. If you see anything acting funny, let us know. Now if we could get the other sites up and running....

up late, thought i'd see if we were up and running. went through some different things and everything looks like it's back to normal. only wierd thing i encountered was 5 members on bottom of home page, and none showing names, and when i click who's online still nuthin. could be they are invisable, even if it's a glitch it's nothing to worry about. tell chris we appreciate the long hours spent giving us our home back. we do love it here. hope your other sites go smoothly.

welcome back all
I'm not sure what the allure of logging in invisible is. We aren't the large group we once were and the bulk of forum is sheltered in member only access. anyway thanks to Chris for all the effort.

My computer did not want to find the main site -- www.redhotsweeps.com all morning.... I just got it now to pull up the actual page..... since I have that as my home page I was afraid things might have went haywire yesterday...but am so glad to see they are being managed!

Nothing with computers is AS EASY anymore it seems..... my own office computer took over a hour to get it to work right.... had to use lots of programs before it "kicked" in and started working, so some of that in paragraph one might have been on MY side.

AHHHH to be back to some relative order.

Not on your side. There's a problem with the banner ad script on the homepage that's causing that page to load very, very slow and then it doesn't show the ad. That script is the first thing the page tries to load before anything else (no control over that) and until it decides that it's not working, nothing else comes up. So that's on the "to fix list".

Also, emails from the forum are not going out, sort of. They're trying to go out but the email address that's set up for that wasn't set back up last night so all the emails are bouncing back to me. This is for any notification emails to subscribed threads, pm notices, renewal notices, birthday notices -- anything that the forum automatically generates an email for. Chris will fix that tonight when he gets in from work. He can't get access to anything on the server from work so anything that comes up will have to wait until he gets in.

Nope. I think a redundant drive would cost more and we already pay out big bucks for the server and can't afford to add more. Not sure what a hot swap is. I know he did a backup and then restored but little problems kept popping up which took way longer than he anticipated. And he sat there with Rackspace on the phone with him a lot of the time helping out. They really have great customer service.
