Ebay Hacked

This is from KIM KOMANDO --

Massive Security Breach and Scam Alert
After all of the high-profile data breaches from Target, Adobe, Michaels, and other large businesses, you would think there were no places left for hackers to hit. Unfortunately, that isn't the case.

Auction site and global retailer eBay is the latest major American corporation to admit to a massive data breach. EBay says that hackers hit its main database, which holds user account information like usernames, email addresses and passwords.

EBay hasn't said how many passwords the hackers stole, but it's asking all of its 128 million users to change their passwords immediately.

The retailer released a statement saying that it would send an email with instructions to affected customers today.

Scam alert: Knowing this, hackers will likely send their own fake versions of the email. Those emails will ask you to click on a link so you can change your password. Don't do it! The link will take you to a malicious website.

The real email from eBay won't have any links. It will tell you to log in to your eBay account and give instructions about where to go to change the password. Also, don't believe anyone who calls claiming to be from eBay.

So far, eBay says hackers were able to access employee log-in credentials, which gave them unlimited access to eBay's corporate network. EBay claims that this network doesn't include credit card numbers, which are stored on a separate system.

Unfortunately, things aren't that simple. Alarmingly, eBay says that the database was compromised between late February and early March, but the breach wasn't detected until a few weeks ago. While the passwords were encrypted, that doesn't mean much to some hackers.

They've had plenty of time to secretly log in to user's accounts to steal information like names, addresses, and credit card numbers or use the accounts for fraudulent purchases.

Anyone who has had an eBay account needs to act now and change his or her password. If you used the same password on other online accounts, you should change your passwords there as well.

What can you do besides change your passwords? As usual, there isn't much. If hackers already have your information there's no way to get it back. You can, however, know when they try to use it and put a stop to it before it spirals out of control.

They don't "let it out" till they figure it out, and put in some safeguards, close the loopholes, etc. so they can say...

"We've identified the issues and have them resolved"....

They want to be able to actually find and "watch" the process so that they can then patch it up and study the methodology (is that a word?).

AND letting the hackers know they were "on" to them, wouldn't allow them to do that.

PS I changed my passwords which I have had FOREVER!!!

I never LINKED my ebay to my paypal, and have to fill in passwords every time I need to print a label, but I think this was a ROUTE to people's paypal accounts for the hackers and all the info that is there as well... ... if they were linked. Sure, it's easy to link it and process the labels, but I really don't like the idea and so I have always avoided it. It does some days cause me issues (errors) but I put up with that rather than have it linked.

Also have one old expired credit card on my one account -- and pay by paypal each time I get a notice it's due. Hoping I never have to update that

I think you are likely fine.... In the beginning ... like 10 years ago. They didn't make you verify your bank account, credit card etc. So nothing would have been linked, etc.

But.... now someone could steal your eBay account, use it to list things with expensive fees and eBay will want the FEES for listing those things from you. AND you won't know if any of that happens till they send you an email with the bill --- so it might go on for a month before you'd know it.
AND when they crack in... they can also change the email on file, so you don't get a notice when they actually change your eBay password.

If you are worried, go up and contact eBay.
I have lots of old accounts that have been dormant for a long time I don't use, and I am not going up to change any of them. I would just "explain" that it wasn't my doing and usually they can see it's obvious it isn't.

When my CDRPLANET ebay account was hacked - they listed hair straighteners (49.95 each) on 1 day auctions, like 100 or more of them -- with payment going to their paypal account. Hoping to get the $$ quick and never have to send the hair straighteners to the people who paid, and I would be the one they'd have come after for the product and for the selling fees. BUT -- no one bought any by the time I found out. AMEN to that, as it could have been quite an issue. They have MORE safeguards in place now than they had then, but it still could be done something like that if a person really wanted to do it. It didn't cost me anything. Ebay took care of it. But ... I then closed that account totally to be safe.

I sent in and changed this as they requested. But today get yet another email that seems to be from ebay. But never click on those links. Went into my account and on the main page is a note that says if you changed the password since 5/21 no other action needed. So just curious checked there and sure enough no new email come from them. So be careful if you get another email from "looks like" ebay. I checked around on my account and no new activity.

Yeah ... one of the things they said was to IGNORE the emails that look like they come from ebay and go up "independantly" and change it.

I did so days ago, directly. I have gotten emails about it, but NO links in them...just saying to go and do it.

all of US are safe!

Well, today I got an e-mail saying to go to the site and change my password. But since I did a couple of weeks ago, after I was blocked out from all that trouble, I just don't know whether I should change it again, or not.

I keep checking my accounts, and no false activity shows up, so I'm puzzled.

And the trouble they say happened in, what, Feb & March? That had to be what blocked me out in the first place.

So, now I'm really puzzled, and am tempted to do nothing at this point. Any suggestions?
