Exclamation **PLEASE** Read this if you get a popup when coming to the forums!!!

chris installed a parasite detector a couple of weeks ago.

when you access the forums, if your PC has some spyware on it, you might receive one of these popups and you will continue to get them till the spyware has been removed from your computer.

this is NOT an advertisement. the forum has never had popup ads since its inception.

this may not cover all of the spyware out there, but it does detect quite a few of them.

take a look through the computer forum for more info on this spyware and what you can do to help get rid of it.

http://www.redhotsweeps.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=31

your anti-virus protection does not help with spyware. spyware is something completely different.

[added by Linda]
As of 4/22, there are no more FastClick ad pop-unders on RHSS so the ONLY pop-ups/unders you should get anywhere on RHSS are the parasiteware warnings if your computer is infected.

Thanks Chris, and thanks Pip for letting us know.

I have had something similiar pop up at some other sites I have visited, but have always been reluctant to do anything other than delete the popup. Haven't received it here, but if I do, I will be sure to use it and see what happens

I see them once in a while too Cindy, but not at a trusted site like RHSS. I am not convinced that the notices at the other sites are genuine either. They seem to be pop ups to entice you to buy a particular removal software. At least that's my take - maybe I am getting gun shy in my old age tho.

not gun shy brad, i happen to agree with you, specially if the site utilizes popups to begin with.

It might help if you actually show people what these popups look like, or give them a direct quote. I visit one site that after a delay will uncscroll a popup at the bottom of the screen that reminds me so of the way you describe Chris's addition. It sounds so helpful and concerned for your spyware safety. The other I do not touch, ever, as it transforms into a normal spam type popup hyping various things after displaying for a minute. In 5 minutes it disappears and I have never even touched that one to delete it.
When you have more than one window open, it's hard to be positive just where a popup is coming from.

Here is what you would see if the script detects something except it would name the spyware/parasite that it found.

Do you have access to change the text in the message Linda? If so, changing "Our system" to "RHSS" might add some comfort level for our users, and positively ID the popup as RHSS related.
Just a thought Ma'am.

Linda - Thanks for the show and tell; suspect this is one of those instances where a picture really is worth a thousand reassuring words. The bad popup I've experienced elsewhere comes up in yellow, like a sticky note at the bottom of the screen. The verbage is sadly, very very similar. It does transform into obvious spam after rolling itself up and then unscrolling a time or two.

Good idea Brad. Only problem is that we are running the same script on all the sites. To us, RHSS means something. To the avg visitor, they don't know what it means.

I might be able to do a little fanageling with the code and make it work. Will have to look at it when I get in today. Any other suggestions? Wordage? Saying "THIS IS NOT AN AD"?

Spell it out - Red Hot Sweeps. 'This is not an ad' or any of the ambiguous wording sounds so like a scam.

The Red Hot Sweeps monitoring software has detected that your PC may be infected with a parasite.

Whoever cannot recognize that, prolly will never click on it anyway - those who do recognize it will associate it with the Good Guys... it needs to be kept reasonably concise, kinda like a highway sign, it is said that folks only read the first 30 seconds of a sign - therefore to add more verbiage does not add to the understanding of the message on that sign. And Betty is right, claiming not be an ad, is usually a red flag that it is.

The scoop on NewDotNet is shown here Michele -

http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/NewDotNet.html

But this is all you really need to know -

Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware 6 also remove NewDotNet.
