No Automated Entries Allowed        No Automated Entries Allowed

Auto Entry (Automation) has been surfacing quite frequently recently. Unfortunately this trend is not good for the companies or hobbyist who enjoy entering contests and sweepstakes. We have found that many companies and sweepers are unaware of the problems that auto entry can cause, so we have put together some information to help inform you about it.

For Website Owners:

What is auto entry (automation)?
We consider auto entry to be when an entrant uses a program or service to automatically enter your contest or sweepstakes without ever having gone to your site or page in order to do so. There are programs which the entrant can have on their own computer that does this as well as paid services which enter on behalf on the person.

What is Not auto entry (automation)?
There are several programs that assist people in entering contests and completing forms. By assisting they keep track of what they have entered or use simple macro functions to complete a form instead of manually typing into the form fields. Programs in this area include Sweep! (tracking software), TypeItIn, IE (has the function built in), Roboform, and Keyboard Express. While these types of programs are assisting the entrants, they all still require an entrant to personally come to your site to enter each time.

Why is auto entry not a good idea?
The majority of websites use contests and sweepstakes promotions as a way of getting new visitors, and hopefully new customers to their site. You hope to gain more product/service awareness in the process. When entrants use auto entry programs and services you loose all of that. They do not see your site and what you have to offer. Some companies don't seem to mind as much as they automatically put entrants onto their mailing lists, however a great many companies do not automatically add entrants because of the vast amounts of spam complaints received in doing so. These companies are the ones that truly suffer from auto entries.

How to help prevent auto entries from being used in your promotion:
First of all include in your official rules that no automated entries are permitted. Many of the services out there will follow this if it is in your official rules.

Other ways to help would be to include a question that changes, some sort of treasure or icon hunt or other action that changes daily, weekly, monthly (depending on how often a person may enter). Auto entries rely on things staying the same each time, they are less likely to include promotions which have changes for each entry.

You can also post the "No Auto Entry" graphic we have provided on your website near the entry form. This shows that you are aware of automation and it is not welcome. You are welcome to link back to this page at http://www.redhotsweeps.com/noauto.htm with the graphic so others can read more about automation.

Companies hold contests and sweepstakes as a form of advertisement. On the internet they want you to visit their site and see what they have to offer by way of products, services and advertisers. When you use the auto entries you don't go to their site and see any of that. The more money a company makes the more likely they are to hold future contests and sweepstakes. With the smaller companies, the more orders they get from people who are entering the more likely they are to hold more contests and sweepstakes.

How can you help?
Of course don't use the automated programs or services, but you can also help by letting other sweepers know about why it's not a good idea. Many people who are new to sweeping have no idea why automation is bad - let them know your thoughts about it. If you have a site of your own you can also use one of our "No Auto Entry" graphics and link to this page http://www.redhotsweeps.com/noauto.htm or create your own page on your site with this information. You are welcome to use this text on this page and the "No Auto Entry" graphic.
